Amana Guides
A property page from the guide: photograph, facts, QR code and a Confirmed by property stamp
Cover of Halal Safari, Kenya
For Muslim travellers to Kenya

Kenya, checked for Muslim travellers.

We asked each place the questions that decide your trip: is there halal meat, is alcohol served, is there somewhere to pray. Then, for every place that answered, we printed exactly who, and when.

The problem

A tag is not an answer.

Most travel guides tell you what a camp or hotel says about itself. Booking sites give you a green “halal-friendly” label and no way to find out who said so, when, or what it covers.

This guide asks the questions you would ask, writes the answer down in the property's own words, and prints who gave it and the month. Where a property did not answer, the entry says “Not established”, which is not the same as no.

In this guide
Facts, stamp and source line from a property entry
A real entry: the answer, who it came from, a date and a stamp. (Name withheld on this page.)
From question to stamp: six questions, the property's reply, one stamp and a month
From the guide: how an answer becomes a stamp.
The method

Six questions, every property.

  • Halal meat and how much notice is needed
  • Supplier and certification: who supplies the meat, and who certifies it, if anyone
  • Alcohol at meals, and on the property
  • A place to pray, or prayer in the room
  • The qibla, and whether a prayer mat is provided
  • Muslim guests hosted before, and what to arrange in advance

An honest “no” stays in the guide. No property paid to appear, and no free stays, meals or transport were accepted.

The proof

Who said it, and when.

This is one entry, as printed. Every property in the guide reads like this: a photograph the property allowed us to use, then what it told us.

  1. The stamp says where the information came from. Here the property answered us itself.
  2. The responder and the date are printed under the facts. In the book the name and job title of the person who answered are printed; here they are covered, since an advert is not what they agreed to.
  3. Facts in the property's own words, with “Not established” where it did not say.
  4. The credit line on the photograph names who owns it.
